Gearing Up Driver Mentor Program

Gearing Up is a driver mentoring program operating in the Huon Valley and Kingborough region designed to help new drivers get valuable driving experience.

Gearing Up is for anyone who wants to drive, and:

  • has difficulty getting the 50 hours driving experience required for a provisional licence
  • is experiencing financial hardship
  • has limited access to a vehicle.

How it works

When you join the program, you will be assigned a volunteer mentor. This mentor will accompany you on drives in a fully insured, roadworthy vehicle, until you complete the required hours needed to obtain a provisional license.

Please note: Gearing Up is not a replacement for professional driving lessons. Applicants are required to undertake town professional driving lessons from a recognised driving school prior to commencing.

Mentors are not driving instructors, their supervising role is intended to take the place of a parent, guardian, or fully licensed driver.

The Gearing Up program is available at no cost to the participant.  If you are interested in finding out more about this program or wish to apply to be a participant, contact Huon Valley Council on 6264 0300.

This program is funded by the Tasmanian Government and is supported by Driver Mentoring Tasmania (DMT), this body overseas all driver mentoring programs in Tasmania.
