Geeveston Community Centre (GeCo)

Geeveston Community Centre (known locally as GeCo) is Australia’s southernmost
Neighbourhood House and is part of the Neighbourhood Houses Tasmania network. GeCo was established 30 years ago and our mission is to mitigate the social impacts of the decline of Geeveston’s primary industries by bringing people together to focus upon opportunities, wellbeing and equity. Our target population is Huon Valley residents, who have some of the highest levels of unemployment and poor literacy levels in Tasmania – identified in the 2011 Australian Census. We currently have 11 part-time staff members, and approximately 25 volunteers who regularly contribute to the programs at GeCo. Our objective is to build community capacity through skill development, education and by partnering with other organisations to deliver maximum social benefit in a variety of way including literacy and other training support; a labour hire program called Tasmania Works; work readiness training; training for learner drivers; school holiday programs; art, craft and exercise classes; community meals; a woodworking space called ‘The Doghouse’; Fresh Choice Food Co-op, providing veggie boxes to members of the community; a burgeoning market garden with training aspects known as Scrubby Hill Farm.
