Phoenix Creations

David and Michelle Rauenbusch, of Phoenix Creations in Cygnet, bring to life the centuries-old art of hand-carving wooden spoons to the Huon Valley. With their unique flair for creativity, each spoon is a work of art! David has been absorbed with or as Michelle says, “addicted to” Spoon Carving for the past 6 years, after falling into it by creating a spoon for Michelle as a peace offering after a row. Each piece is created from ethically sourced, vintage, recycled timbers, and local greenwood saved from the chipper or burn pile- which is always a thing to rejoice!
Their Soul Spoons, the name given to their range, as they put their heart and soul into creating them, are all individually hand-carved by David in their studio and garden in Cygnet. They come in all shapes, sizes and even colours with the help of non- toxic milk paint and a beautiful array of timbers. They also hand carve wooden jewellery, kuksas (think Viking cup), knives, and chopping boards-actually Dave will have a go at hand carving any kitchen or craft utensil-just ask.

With many admirers of their spoons, over 48,000 followers on Instagram and many locals and visitors, David and Michelle were often asked how they created their Soul Spoons. “With so many interested people asking us about the process, we thought it would be great to share the skills during small, personal workshops,” says Michelle. So, in 2018, their spoon carving workshops began and have continued with great success.

Their workshops cater for all ages and skill levels-from absolute beginners to those that want to hone their skills. For individuals in a longer private workshop or up to 4 people- with friends or family or make new friends in a workshop of individuals. Special Kids Workshops are also available. Many people have gifted a workshop to a loved one.
“One lovely family I taught was a son and his 70 yr old mum, who had been given the workshop as her birthday present. It was a really nice bonding moment and I’m glad I could share it with them” says David.
